Advent: 16 December

Jesus said in John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Jesus came so that we may have life and have it abundantly. Christ came into the world, in a manager that WE could have life. Now that statement is pretty familiar to us and has been misused by some, but let me make this connection for you today.

Jesus coming into the world as a newborn baby meant we would have new life. His earthly life beginning meant that the power of death was soon to be defeated. Christ’s coming abolished death (2 Timothy 1:10). Death’s days were numbered when Christ was born and not only that but new life would be possible through him for all who believe.

This time of year is when we consider that Jesus came into this world to have victory over death. The penalty of our sin which is death and separation from God. Was to be replaced with life, abundant life which meant forgiveness of our sin and our relationship with God being restored. That is why Christ came into the world. To bring everlasting life.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57

“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? ”The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Only One Life, Twill Soon Be Past – Poem by C.T Studd

Today is my birthday and so whenever this time of year comes around I try remind my self of what this poem encapsulates.

Two little lines I heard one day,
Traveling along life’s busy way;
Bringing conviction to my heart,
And from my mind would not depart;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one,
Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet,
And stand before His Judgement seat;
Only one life,’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, the still small voice,
Gently pleads for a better choice
Bidding me selfish aims to leave,
And to God’s holy will to cleave;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, a few brief years,
Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
Each with its clays I must fulfill,
living for self or in His will;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Symptoms of Zombies

Braaainnss…If there is any fictional character that I would call my favorite it would most likely be Zombies. Why is that? I don’t know, they are cool I guess. There is the traditional zombie. Slow, not very smart, wants to eat your brains and typically found in large groups. Then there is slightly smart ones (they can open doors and climb…eek), ones that have crazy strength and some that are very fast. They are found in games, movies and various forms of literature.  Basically if you want something with a zombie theme you could probably find it, to such an extent that a friend of mine is waiting for a big sticker for his car to be delivered that says “Zombie Response Vehicle” (how cool is that?). While we are all most likely briefed in Zombie survival 101 thanks to the media I do think we need to talk about the type of zombies that do exist and the symptoms used to spot them. No I am not crazy! Allow me to explain how we as people can resemble zombies in our lives. Read on.

So lets look at two main components that make up the character of a zombie. First they are not very smart. A zombie doesn’t use their brain. Their ability to think clearly or logically is none existent. Zombies don’t have deep meaningful conversations with each other, just grunts. Read more…

SnapPost #1 – A book from a stranger

The below is a written for the weekly challenge, let me know what you think.

Regaining my balance I now held a scrap of paper and a book in my hand as he walked off without looking back. I read the paper; “This is not a drill! You have one life to live. Don’t waste it, live it well. Read the book.” The book was,

Just Quote’n (Piper) #1 and free book download

The below quote is from John Piper’s ’50 Reasons why Jesus came to die’  book you can download the full book here for free!

In our happiest times we do not want to die. The wish for death rises only when our suffering seems unbearable. What we really want in those times is not death, but relief. We would love for the good times to come again. We would like the pain to go away…We want life and happiness…We are kidding ourselves when we romanticize death…The longing of the human heart is to live and to be happy. God made us that way. “He has put eternity into man’s heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11)…eternal life is not merely the extension of this life with its mix of pain and pleasure. As hell is the worst outcome of this life, so “eternal life” is the best. It is supreme and ever-increasing happiness where all sin and all sadness will be gone. All that is evil and harmful in this fallen creation will be removed…It is true every moment of life, now and always: For those who trust Christ the best is yet to come.
