Putting Life in Perspective…and writing stories

Advent: 5 December (Nthato)

The below has been written by my good friend Nthato. You can find more of his work over here

I amble through fluorescent lit hallways, of a local mall bustling with the activity of ants at a picnic area. A burly fellow in a thick red suit and bristling white beard draping to his chest, smiles amiably as kids rush to sit on his lap. Its boiling hot and everyone is in short sleeves, yet no one questions the woolly suit of the patron saint of reindeers, presents and frequent flyer miles.

Saint Nikolaos of Myra was known for his habit of secret gift-giving, dropping coins in the shoes of those who left them out. Today, it is no longer a gift but more an expectation and not one done out of the goodness and kindness of one’s heart, but out of obligation.

When we think of the free gift of salvation that God offers, one we do not deserve nor is He obligated to give, our current perspective of Christmas moves contrary to that. We no longer celebrate the birth of a Saviour who would gift us His life and perfection when we do not deserve it.

Instead we celebrate a tradition of giving where we have been raised to believe we deserve the gifts. Where we judge our own goodness, present it to this false icon, and deem ourselves worthy. That is not how it should work when “the heart is more deceitful than all else, and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jer 17:9) and when “there is none who does good, there is not even one.” (Rom 3:12).

Advent: 4 December

Matthew 1:18-25

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”

(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

Santa is a lie

So…lets talk about Santa. We all know the truth here, right? He isn’t real. To be honest Santa is a pretty messed up lie. I remember when I was young and used to believe in Santa, I used to get so excited! I also remember when the inevitable happened and I figured out that he wasn’t real. I was so sad. Sad because I had been lied to and sad because I knew I wouldn’t get gifts form him anymore.

I am a father to be (due in May) and I have resolved not to let my Child believe the lie. Yes, they will probably be ‘that’ kid that ‘ruins’ it for others by mistake. But I don’t want them to be ruined by the lie. Here are the reasons why;

  • How do you expect your child to trust you if one of the first things you teach them is a lie?
  • Why create doubt in your child? If Santa is a lie then what about Jesus? Why should I have faith in the one and not the other?
  • Teaching your child about Santa is also teaching them to be greedy. The lists of gifts…oh the long, long lists.
  • Santa teaches that good behavior must be bought. The better I behave the better gifts I might get

A fake person that gives presents to people once a year? “You better behave if you want gifts!” If your family hasn’t got any money then Santa doesn’t care about you as much as he does the rich kids. That is not what Christmas is about. Cut it out.

Advent: 1 December

Unless you live under a rock you already know what time of year it is. Yes the festive season is underway. Those old songs you haven’t heard since last year are in circulation again. Red, and fluffy white are in fashion, and there are decorations all over the malls. Today is the 1st of December, only 24 more sleeps until Christmas.

This post is part of an advent project I have decided to take on for this season. Why? Well because I want the real reason for this season to be seen amongst all the red cups, pumpkin spiced goods and wrapping paper that surrounds us.

What are you in for in the coming days? Well I have brought together other authors with intentions of making these advent posts brief, but thoughtful. You are going to find different formats throughout these weeks. Some days we will just share a piece of scripture for you to read and think through. Sometimes a short article. Some days there will be short audio clips to listen to. Perhaps a song that we think might be encouraging. We may even, possibly, no guarantee, load up some videos to watch. Point is the content is going to be delivered differently and hopefully in a way that is easy to engage with. We know that sometimes articles can get TL:DR and we aim to give you something that is short and simple but that helps you to remember the reason for this season. Come back tomorrow for our next post. For today here is a cheesy music video 🙂
